HaKaSe+ carried out its original study abroad program “HaKaSe+ Global Camp in Taiwan 2025”
HaKaSe+ carried out “HaKaSe+ Global Camp in Taiwan” for 11 days from November 17 to 27, 2025.
“HaKaSe+ Global Camp in Taiwan” is the original study abroad program for students selected for HaKaSe+ in collaboration with National Taiwan Normal University (NTNU), one of our university’s international partner institutions. Prof. Hui-Ling Sung, Associate Vice President for Continuing Education of NTNU, developed and realized this Camp as a Program coordinator.
This Camp was started in FY 2023 and this was the third time with the hope that students selected for HaKaSe+, who will be active on the world stage in the future with doctoral degree, cultivate a broader perspective, internationality, and interdisciplinarity, and to take the first step toward international joint research.
A total of 9 students in research fields of humanities, social sciences, natural sciences, and life sciences selected for WISE Program for Nano-Precision Medicine, Science, and Technology (HaKaSe+ for WISE), SPRING Project for Doctoral Talents in Creating Novel Values (HaKaSe+ for SPRING), and BOOST Project for Trailblazing AI Crossover Doctoral Talents (HaKaSe+ for BOOST) participated in this camp.
The camp consisted of research exchange activities, learning about cutting-edge technologies, and cross-cultural engagement. On the first day, Prof. Sung provided an orientation outlining the program’s objectives and expected outcomes. During the research exchange component, students visited several laboratories at NTNU, gaining first-hand exposure to the latest research trends. They also visited research labs and facilities at leading Taiwanese universities, including National Tsing Hua University (NTHU) and National Taiwan University (NTU). Through interactions with researchers and doctoral students, participants deepened their understanding of international research trends and interdisciplinary perspectives. Notably, at NTU, students had the opportunity to take part in experiments in the agricultural sciences—an area not available at Kanazawa University. These visits offered valuable experiences that prompted students to reflect on the significance of their own research.
The program also included a visit to the TSMC Museum, operated by Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company, a global leader in the semiconductor industry. Experiencing world-class technological innovation first-hand was highly inspiring and helped students enhance their understanding of how research and technology are implemented in society.
In the classroom sessions, students learned practical marketing strategies essential for internationally active PhD-level professionals, as well as hands-on skills for effective English presentations. The specially organized AI seminar—developed in response to the rapid advancement of AI technologies and their growing applicability across diverse fields—allowed students to try their hand at programming.
For the cross-cultural component, students attended a joint class with NTNU students on Taiwanese culture and participated in lectures on Mandarin Chinese, diabolo (Chinese yo-yo), and calligraphy. Visits to cultural and historical institutions enriched their understanding of Taiwan’s heritage, while informal exchanges with local students at night markets further deepened cultural engagement. Through these experiences, participants broadened their perspectives beyond their own fields of expertise and actively built international networks.
The program concluded with personalized words of encouragement from Prof. Sung, based on each student’s final report, marking the successful completion of this enriching overseas experience.
HaKaSe+ will further develop its collaboration with NTNU, and improve our special program for the next year.
