HaKaSe+ carried out its original study abroad program “HaKaSe+ Global Camp in Taiwan”

HaKaSe+ carried out “HaKaSe+ Global Camp in Taiwan” for 10 days from November 15 to 24, 2024.

“HaKaSe+ Global Camp in Taiwan” is the original study abroad program for students selected for HaKaSe+ in collaboration with National Taiwan Normal University (NTNU), one of our university’s international partner institutions. Prof. Hui-Ling Sung, Associate Vice President for Continuing Education of NTNU, developed and realized this Camp as a Program coordinator.
This Camp was started in FY 2023 and this was the second time with the hope that students selected for HaKaSe+,who will be active on the world stage in the future with doctoral degree, cultivate a broader perspective, internationality, and interdisciplinarity, and to take the first step toward international joint research.

A total of 9 students in research fields of natural sciences or life sciences selected for WISE Program for Nano-Precision Medicine, Science, and Technology (HaKaSe+ for WISE), SPRING Project for Doctoral Talents in Creating Novel Values (HaKaSe+ for SPRING), and BOOST Project for Trailblazing AI Crossover Doctoral Talents (HaKaSe+ for BOOST) participated in this camp.

In this year’s Camp, participating students learned practical and useful English presentation skills necessary to succeed internationally active as a doctoral talent in the 1st day lesson, and gave numerous research presentations in front of researchers and doctoral students during visits to universities and research institutes. In addition to several laboratories at NTNU, students visited National Taiwan University (NTU), Genomic Research Center of Academia Sinica, National Health Research Institutes, and Tamkang University. Through research exchanges and discussions with researchers and doctoral students in these institutions, students deepened their knowledge of international research trends and different research fields, as well as reconsidered the significance of their own research. In addition, with the recent technological advances in AI, there is a need to explore and expand the potential applications of AI regardless of the field of research, so NTNU set a special AI seminar where participating students tried their hand at programming a car robot.
The exchange with local students included an event in which participating students taught science experiments to Taiwanese high school students, and they realized how difficult it was to communicate with others in plain, easy-to-understand words.
They also visited Realtek and E ink, two of the world’s leading companies in Taiwan, to observe cutting-edge technologies and their actual social implementation.
Besides, they enjoyed cross-cultural exchanges through lectures such as “Mandarin,” Taiwanese national language, calligraphy, and paper-cutting, and visits to night markets and tourist attractions with local Taiwanese students.
Through this Camp and thanks to all of collaborators, the participating students had experience of interacting and collaborating with various researchers and students in Taiwan, and worked hard to gain perspectives outside their field, build international networks,
At the end of the Camp, the program coordinator, Prof. Sung, gave feedback to each participating student with words of encouragement based on their reports, and making this camp meaningful days for all participating students.
HaKaSe+ will further develop its collaboration with NTNU, and improve our special program for the next year.
